For my second assignment for Art, Media and Databases, I decided to manipulate a database of words from Digital Media outgoing graduates and turning it into a pattern for a scarf.

On visualized Valedictorian speeches and wrapped words of encouragement.

In an array of graduates, there is only one Valedictorian -one whose words resound throughout the sea of students and serve as inspiration for bright-eyed Freshmen. In the Digital Media program, there are no Valedictorians. There are no words that publicly ring through the hearts of their peers, only a silent walk on stage and a diploma as a badge of survival.

My project takes these unspoken words from outgoing Digital Media graduates and convert them to ASCII values to generate colours to form a visual coloured pattern printed on fabric, forming a scarf to literally wrap oneself with words of encouragement and support in the eternal Winter of schoolwork and stress, to put it in creative wording. The repeated pattern represents the instances of every Digital Media student who goes through the same struggles and experiences. The shape and connected lines give homage to Max/MSP patches, linked lists and array diagrams. “DM” (Digital Media), a term very dear to only those who’ve experienced it is the center node and the glitch-like configuration that begins when “DM” is mentioned represents the individual experiences that made the Digital Media program a significant but positive disturbance in the force.

These are my lovely friends, white boy central featuring (from left-to-right), Mike, William and my partner, Chris.
